The Song of Zechariah
Text: Luke 1:67-80
Context: Zechariah and Elizabeth are told that they will bear the son who will prepare the way for the Messiah. Their son will be John the Baptist.
Main Idea: Christmas is a powerful time to worship God and share the story of Jesus with others.
The prophecy of Zechariah calls us to…
Praise God for his Salvation (vs. 67-75)
He visited us to redeem us when we were helpless (vs. 68)
He raised up a horn of salvation in the line of King David (vs. 69 - See Luke 1:27; 2 Samuel 7:12-16)
His salvation is the fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy (vs. 70)
His salvation is a fulfillment of the promise God made to Abraham (vs. 73 - Genesis 12:1-3; Galatians 3:14, 29)
His salvation makes us holy and righteous before Him. (vs. 75)
2. Prepare the way for Jesus (vs. 76-77)
John the Baptist had a role to prepare the way for Jesus.
We serve a similar role as the church to give the knowledge of salvation to others for the forgiveness of their sins.
3. Provide light for those in Darkness (78-80)
John was a bright light shining into the darkness for Jesus.
We are called to be a light to the world. (Matthew 5:14-16)
