SERMON NOTES:

BEING SECOND . . . . . Tells Me Who I am

Hebrews 10:23-36

I. NOT KNOWING WHO I AM CAN LEAD ME TO APOSTASY

They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us. (1 John 2:19, NIV)

Beware! Understanding something and committing to something are 2 different things.

At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold. (Matthew 24:10-12, NIV)

No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. (1 John 3:9, NIV)

If I don’t know who I am, Satan can use 3 things to push me farther from God:

1. Persecution

Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. (Matthew 24:9, NIV)

But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. (1 Peter 4:13, NIV)

2. Temptation

Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world. (2 Timothy 4:10) NKJV

Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. (James 1:15, NIV)

3. Simple neglect

For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation. (Hebrews 2:2-3a) NKJV

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16) NIV

And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.” But God said to him, “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’” (Luke 12:19-20) NIV

SERMON NOTES:

“Consumed: 5 Steps to Freedom”

Part V: GOD’S POWER & MY LIFE

Exodus 14:15-31

In order to allow God to put his powerful freedom into my life…

I. I must act on my belief in God’s power.

1. Faith is not faith until it is acted upon.

Hebrews 11:6;  Hebrews 12:1

2. I must move on, leaving my past, my addictions, my old comfort zone.

1 John 5:3-4.

II. I must pay no attention to the “second-guessers”

I must always be ready to say no to going backwards and to keep moving closer to God.

Hebrews 10:23

III. I must trust God to deliver me.

1. in order to receive God’s deliverance, I must move forward at God’s command.

2. Specific steps I might need to make:

          1.       A change of focus;

          2.       A change of friends;

          3.       A change of place;

          4.       A change of habits.

SERMON NOTES:

Consumed: 5 Steps to Freedom

PART IV: THE PRICE TAGS OF LIFE

Exodus 11-12

I. THE COST OF DELAY.

But the Lord hardened Pharaoh’s heart once more, and he would not let them go. “Get out of here!” Pharaoh shouted at Moses. “I’m warning you. Never come back to see me again! The day you see my face, you will die!” “Very well,” Moses replied. “I will never see your face again.” Exodus 10:27-29

1. Every time I delay giving myself completely to Christ, it becomes easier to say no the next time.

They traded the truth about God for a lie. So they worshiped and served the things God created instead of the Creator himself, who is worthy of eternal praise! Amen. That is why God abandoned them to their shameful desires. Even the women turned against the natural way to have sex and instead indulged in sex with each other. And the men, instead of having normal sexual relations with women, burned with lust for each other. Men did shameful things with other men, and as a result of this sin, they suffered within themselves the penalty they deserved. Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done. Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. Romans 1:25-30

2. The end result of delay: complete destruction.

What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death! Romans 6:21

II. THE COST OF GOING YOUR OWN WAY.

This way of living will cost you your family, job, and life. All suffer.

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. Proverbs 26:12

III.  THE COST OF FREEDOM.

1. Complete freedom only comes about when someone dies.

For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Romans 6:6-7

2. A lifestyle of protection:

            1) Weekly meetings;

            2) Regular accountability;

            3) Weekly worship;

            4) Strong involvement in lifegroups.

If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it. Luke 9:24

SERMON NOTES

HOW TO HANDLE THE REBELLION

(Exodus 5:1-23)

I. I MUST DECIDE WHO’S IN CHARGE.

1. My freedom creates a backlash.

And don’t try to test Christ, as some of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes. Don’t even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel. These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days. Even if you think you can stand up to temptation, be careful not to fall. 1 Corinthians 10:9-12

Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence. 1 Corinthians 10:12

2. My friends/family may feel threatened by the “new me.”

As dead flies give perfume a bad smell, so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. Ecclesiastes 10:1

Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing. To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this? 2 Corinthians 2:15-16

3. Change may not happen fast enough for me.

Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised. Hebrews 10:36

II. I MUST DECIDE THAT I WILL NEVER COMPROMISE.

I must stand firm when I’m tempted to give in “just a little.”

I will never forget your commandments, for by them you give me life. Psalm 119:93

I am determined to keep your decrees to the very end. Psalm 119:112

SERMON NOTES: WHEN MY HURTS AND GOD COLLIDE Exodus 3:1-14

I. MY CHOICES DETERMINE WHERE I AM TODAY.

Why do I make wrong choices?

1. I have the illusion I’m in control of the situation.

I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course. Jeremiah 10:23

I know, Lord, that we humans are not in control of our own lives. Jeremiah 10:23

2. I act without thinking about what God wants.

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Genesis 3:6

Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression. Psalm 19:13

II. GOD IS WAITING TO MEET ME WHERE I AM TODAY.

1. When I’m consumed by sin, I wither and eventually die. When I’m consumed by God, I grow stronger and eventually model His character.

Our desires make us sin, and when sin is finished with us, it leaves us dead. James 1:15

2. I cannot meet God and plan to stay the same.

Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

3. My stumbles become my strengths; my pain becomes my power – only when I pick up my hurts and give them to God.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. Romans 8:28

4. As I take my transformed life with me, I go forward into healing.

For it is God who is producing in you both the desire and the ability to do what pleases him. Philippians 2:13

A NEW LOOK AT CHRIST’S RESURRECTION

John 20:1-8

I. HOW SHOULD I LOOK AT CHRIST’S TOMB?

1. I should see more than just the facts.

Then they asked him, “What must we do to do the works God requires?” Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.” John 6:28-29

2. I should believe with more than just my mind.

You believe that God is one; you do well. The demons also believe—and they shudder. James 2:19

And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6

3. I should see with understanding and commitment.

After the suffering of his soul, he will see the light of life and be satisfied; by his knowledge my righteous servant will justify many, and he will bear their iniquities. Therefore I will give him a portion among the great, and he will divide the spoils with the strong, because he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. Isaiah 53:11-12

II. HOW SHOULD I LOOK AT MY OWN LIFE IN LIGHT OF CHRIST’S RESURRECTION?

1. I should live every day with great hope.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3

2. I should realize I am justified before God.

He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. Romans 4:25

Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Romans 8:34

3. I should rejoice that I will have a glorified body like Christ’s.

He will change our weak mortal bodies and make them like his own glorious body, using that power by which he is able to bring all things under his rule. Philippians 3:21

4. I should soberly realize there will be a judgment.

For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead. Acts 17:31
